ANXIETY TRAITS AND JOINT
HYPERMOBILITY
Joint hypermobility is a connective tissue disorder
which is characterised by increased joint laxity.
In this condition the range of motion of the
joint increases beyond its normal limit.
Researches have shown that almost 50% of the people
suffering with this condition show all the symptoms
of anxiety which are manifested in different forms
like Agoraphobia,Generalized Anxiety Disorder,
Social Phobia Disorder, PTSD, etc.
CLINICAL ASSOCIATIONS:
Before we discuss the relationship and associations
of joint hypermobility with anxiety, we need to
understand the cause and manifestation of anxiety.
Whenever we face any kind of threatening or
vulnerable situation, our brain processes the
information in the amygdala which is situated
in our prefrontal cortex. Millions of chemical
reactions occur once the brain receives the
information that something is wrong or off.
This causes anxiety. The underlying cause of
people suffering from anxiety because of the
joint hypermobility is the joint hypermobility
disorder itself. There are some other factors
which can influence this. Some of them are
genetic, age related,sex related etc.
SYMPTOMS OF JOINT HYPERMOBILITY

– particularly towards the end of the day and
after physical activity.
2.Clicking joints.
3.Back and neck pain.
4.Fatigue (extreme tiredness)

TREATMENT
Patients with joint hypermobility can be treated at
different levels:
Informational discussion
Psychological support
Physical therapy
ROLE OF PHYSIOTHERAPISTS:
Physical therapists can devise different exercises
to their patients.
Some of them are strength training exercises, yoga, etc.
The patient is also advised to do swimming or cycling.
For anxiety, he can start doing meditation. Exercise
and meditation can help the patient to bring back
